Why Am I Bloated After Eating Fast

Why it happens

Eating quickly causes bloating through three simultaneous mechanisms. You swallow significantly more air when eating fast — aerophagia — which accumulates in the gut. You chew less thoroughly, which means larger food particles reach the small intestine where they're harder to digest and more likely to reach the large intestine and ferment. And you bypass the cephalic phase of digestion — the saliva and enzyme production that starts before food reaches the stomach — which reduces the digestive capacity available for the meal. Chewing each bite 20 to 30 times, eating over at least 15 to 20 minutes, and stepping away from screens while eating are mechanical fixes that require no dietary changes at all.
