Why Am I Bloated After Artificial Sweeteners

Why it happens
Artificial sweeteners — particularly sorbitol, xylitol, mannitol, and erythritol — are sugar alcohols that are poorly absorbed in the small intestine. They reach the large intestine largely intact where gut bacteria ferment them and produce significant amounts of gas. Research published in Nature found that artificial sweeteners alter the gut microbiome composition in ways that can increase gut dysbiosis and inflammation. Sorbitol is found in most "sugar-free" and "diet" foods, many chewing gums, and some medications. Erythritol is common in protein bars and keto products. Sucralose — while not a sugar alcohol — also appears to negatively affect gut bacteria in some people. The switch to "healthy" diet products often means a massive increase in gut-fermenting sweeteners.
